"Allie, it's me." With these three words, uttered in panic
by her ditzy supermodel sister, lawyer and sometime sleuth Allie
Armington is launched from her cozy, albeit boring life in Texas
to the fast-paced, mean streets of New York City. What follows is
a spine-tingling mystery that pits the former district attorney against
not only a ruthless serial killer, a dangerous ring of South American
drug smugglers, and an elite men's club whose members believe women
can be traded like poker chips - but also against her handsome ex-lover,
Bill Cotton.
In Xs (Little
Moose Press, January 2005), author Louise
Gaylord continues the Allie Armington mystery series with a tale
that combines the gritty, edge-of-your-seat storytelling readers
expect of Patricia Cornwell, Linda Barnes and Valerie Wilson Wesley
with the irrepressible sparks of humor reminiscent of Janet Evanovich
at her best. Gaylord's prior novel, Anacacho, the first book
in the Allie Armington mystery series, won the National Benjamin
Franklin Award for Best Mystery/Suspense novel in 2003.
In this second installment, Allie flies to New York following a
frantic request for twenty thousand dollars from her sister, Angela.
Within hours of arriving in the Big Apple, Allie discovers that Angela
is the latest victim of a plastic surgery scam and that her roommate,
Caro Montoya, is the latest victim of a vicious serial killer whose
signature is a neat, little X carved into the breasts of the beautiful
women he murders. In no time, Allie is immersed in a NYPD investigation
that brings her face-to-face with the love of her life, Bill Cotton.
This time, though, what Allie discovers about Bill's secret life may push them
apart forever - or get one of them killed.
The Allie Armington mystery series continues American literature's
proud tradition of creating captivating female characters who rely
on both intelligence and physical prowess to escape dangerous situations.
Unforgettable characters, witty dialogue and unexpected plot twists
will keep Xs readers turning pages long into the night.
